Mark W. F. Condon has been a teacher educator for more than 30 years. He is Professor Emeritus of literacy education at the University of Louisville. He's one of the creators of RealeWriter, picture-book creation software for early fluent learners.
He's currently working with a project in South Africa to support local teachers there who are creating books for children in the country's eleven official languages. He is also currently working as a literacy coach for two American Indian schools in New Mexico. The best thing about these lines of work is that it keeps him in close connection with children and teachers.
He received his bachelor's degree in English Literature from Kansas University and his doctorate in education with a literacy focus from the University of Missouri - Kansas City.
He became a teacher because "I was an English literature major. What else might one do?" He is also married to a teacher educator and Stenhouse author, Jean Anne Clyde.
When it comes to professional development, he believes that PD should be invitational and actively engaging. "Required attendance and 'sit and git' are a colossal waste of teacher's valuable time and school money."
