Learners Discover Their World Through Inquiry

"Join Brad and Anne as they teach their kids to merge their
thinking with social studies and science content to learn,
understand, and remember it. Step inside their rooms and see how
seamlessly and joyously they create a mix of intellectual
curiosity, passion for the real world, and pure unadulterated fun
to nurture engagement and long-lasting learning. What a terrific
read. I love this book!"
--Stephanie Harvey
"Meaningful learning takes place in an environment that encourages
thoughtfulness. Brad Buhrow and Anne Upczak Garcia know that all
kids, and especially English language learners, will learn and
flourish in an environment that focuses on thinking and
understanding."

*June Quote of the Month*
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious."
--Albert Einstein
Summer provides educators an opportunity to reflect, celebrate
moments of success, and bring a renewed vision of possibilities to
the upcoming year. It's a time to become re-energized and
inspired.
A past issue of The Classroom newsletter, from the Center for the
Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Georgia Tech University,
explores the idea of teaching and passion. As readers we are
challenged to reflect on our teaching and encouraged to relight
our own flame:

What makes good teaching? In the article "Good Teaching: The Top
Ten Requirements," Richard Leblanc of York University (Ontario)
sets passion at the top of his list:

If you were inspired to become a teacher because you wanted to
change the world and instead find yourself limited by teach-to-
the-test pressures, "Compassion, Action, and Change," Chapter 2 of
Mary Cowhey's new book Black Ants and Buddhists, will make you
think hard about how you spend your time with students:

Rick Wormeli says, "Fight the bromide that those who can't,
teach." Middle-level teachers will find plenty of inspiration in
"Stoking the Fires Within," Chapter 1 of Rick's first book Meet Me
in the Middle:

5) Stemming reading decline in older kids
----------------------------------------------------------------
A recent survey by Scholastic and the polling company Yankelovich
found that kids' reading time declines sharply after age 8, and
suggests that a major cause is the difficulty older kids have in
finding books they like. This article from the Pittsburgh Post-
Gazette summarizes the survey report:
