1) Podcasts extend Author Conversations series
----------------------------------------------------------------
Our online series, Author Conversations, continues in a new
format: podcasts. These short audio programs, which can be played
directly on your computer or downloaded to an MP3 player, provide
an opportunity for you to hear Stenhouse authors reflect on their
books and current issues in teaching and professional development.

The first podcast features "The Sisters," Gail Boushey and Joan
Moser, who discuss the basis for their new book, The Daily Five,
and how their classroom structure gets students working
independently so that teachers can focus on small group and one-
on-one teaching:

The entire text of The Daily Five is available to browse online
for a limited time:

want to stay on the leading edge of educational practice? The New
Horizons for Learning's award-winning website offers a vast amount
of information organized into seven sections: Teaching and
Learning Strategies, Perspectives on the Future, Transforming
Education, News from the Neurosciences, Special Needs/Inclusion,
Lifelong Learning, and Student Voices. Get details here:

4) Using writing and talk to help students read beyond plot
----------------------------------------------------------------
"We have begun to think about read-aloud time differently. Instead
of reading a book aloud as students listen quietly, we now
encourage students to explore the possibilities in the text by
participating in discussion and writing activities during the
reading. If the read-aloud time is risk-free and the students are
comfortable giving things a try...they can read deeper into the
text and uncover what only sophisticated readers can uncover."

In this article from Adolescent Literacy In Perspective, Stenhouse
author Franki Sibberson suggests ways to empower students to think
more deeply about books through previewing, reading notebooks,
anchor charts, and focusing on the "big" questions:

Franki is coauthor (with Karen Szymusiak) of Beyond Leveled Books,
Still Learning to Read, Bringing Reading to Life (videos), and
Making the Most of News Magazines (Close-Ups DVD). For details,
sample chapters, and video clips, start here:

reading, check out the Read, Write, and Talk video by Stephanie
Harvey and Anne Goudvis:

5) MySpace: student rights and school authority
----------------------------------------------------------------
As schools increasingly monitor social networking sites such as
MySpace, what do students have the right to say and where can they
say it? This piece posted yesterday in the online magazine Salon
examines the issue:
