*June Quote of the Month*

"Stories, after all, are a gift. Unless we're willing to imagine
what it might feel like inside another skin, then we are
imprisoned in our own."
--John Edgar Wideman

Are you looking to restock your pile of "next read" books?
Columnist Ellen Goodman's annual list of summer reading
recommendations is always a good first stop. This year's
collection contains a surprising number of suggestions with
teenage main characters:

If your time in the hammock will be limited over the next few
months, some shorter pieces might be in order. The list of winners
and finalists for the 2005 National Magazine Awards includes links
to the entire text of most articles (scroll down the page to the
specific award categories):

The Children's Book Council has just released its list of 50
summer-themed titles, beach-reads, and other books for vacation
reading:

Finally, if your goal is to write down more of your own stories
this summer, the quick tips in Chip Scanlan's "Keepers from
Kansas" might provide an inspiring quote or idea to get you
started:

3) Author Conversations: Matt Copeland
----------------------------------------------------------------
Next in our Author Conversations series is Kansas high school
teacher Matt Copeland, author of the new book, Socratic Circles:
Fostering Critical and Creative Thinking in Middle and High
School. Matt discusses getting started with Socratic circles, how
they complement literature circles, and considerations for
choosing good texts:

4) Inspiring commencement speeches
----------------------------------------------------------------
Off they go! Looking for just the right words to send your
students on their way? Humanity.org offers an archive of twenty-
eight "extraordinary" commencement speeches--an eclectic mix
ranging from Toni Morrison ("Be Your Own Story") to The Dalai Lama
("Education and the Warm Heart") to Russell Baker ("10 Ways to
Avoid Mucking Up the World Any Worse Than It Already Is"):

5) Reading: it's not fun anymore
----------------------------------------------------------------
Students are getting fewer opportunities to choose what they read,
especially in high school, as teachers focus on high-stakes tests
and curricular demands. This recent article touches on issues such
as required reading lists, lack of time, and "approved" book
lists:

(Free registration may be required.)

Excerpts from the Children's Choices and Teachers' Choices book
lists are included in the article; the complete lists (including
Young Adults' Choices) are available from the International
Reading Association:
