1) PD Corner: On notebooks
----------------------------------------------------------------
*May Quote of the Month*

"The classroom is the site of my public account as a teacher; the
notebook is the site for my personal account, a refuge for
articulating and revising my teaching life."
--Tim Gillespie, English teacher, Lake Oswego, OR

Many teachers find daily writing in some sort of log or journal to
be essential for learning--both for themselves and their students.
If you're wondering about the difference between a learning log,
journal, and writer's notebook, check out this one-page primer
developed by the Australian Department of Education:

http://www.education.tas.gov.au/english/journals.htm

In "Stories and the Teaching Life" (The Quarterly), Tim Gillespie
recounts the ties between daily writing in his teacher's notebook
and the need for perspective on classroom events:

your students? Aimee Buckner's new book, Notebook Know-How, is
chock-full of innovative strategies for launching, sustaining, and
assessing writers' notebooks. You can now preview the entire text

2) Author Conversations: Debbie Miller
----------------------------------------------------------------
This issue of Newslinks marks the first installment of a new
feature: Author Conversations. Over the next several months, we
will add short video clips of Stenhouse authors to a special page
on our Web site, and introduce each new clip in Newslinks. Here's
your chance to hear authors talk about their books and answer
questions that they are frequently asked.

Our first guest is Debbie Miller, author of the best-selling book,
Reading with Meaning, and the Happy Reading! video series. Debbie
talks about the challenge of "so much to teach and no time to
teach it," and the importance of conferences for assessing student
needs:
