1) Take your class outside

"The schoolyard needs to be viewed as more than just a play area; even the edges and unmowed grass can become sites for academic learning, reflection, community involvement, and recreation."

Herb Broda encourages you to use the most powerful audio-visual tool around--the outdoors--to complement your indoor instruction in his new book Schoolyard-Enhanced Learning.

After making the compelling case for outdoor learning, Herb provides an overview of terminology and supporting educational theory and research. He then guides teachers in every aspect of a successful outdoor classroom: planning, enhancing your site, tapping community resources and funding, class management, and activity ideas for every content area.

Schoolyard-Enhanced Learning will be available in print in early November, but you can review the entire book online now:

2) Teachers drive professional learning, turn their school around
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Spring 2007 issue of JSD from the National Staff Development Council includes a case study of Conrad Ball Middle School in Loveland, Colorado, where teachers used weekly meetings for professional book studies including Strategies That Work and I Read It, but I Don't Get It. These studies helped teachers build background knowledge and were part of a collaborative school-wide effort to improve instruction:
