1) Author Conversations: Lynne Dorfman and Rose Cappelli
----------------------------------------------------------------
We've just posted a new Author Conversations audio podcast featuring
Lynne Dorfman and Rose Cappelli, authors of the new book Mentor Texts:
Teaching Writing Through Children's Literature, K-6. Lynne and Rose
discuss literary borrowing, the importance of teachers practicing and
taking risks with their own writing, and learning how to read like a writer:

2) PD Corner: Supporting new teachers
----------------------------------------------------------------
"It is in identifying yourself with the hopes, dreams, fears, and
longings of others that you may understand them and help them."
--Wilferd A. Peterson

Do you identify with new teachers? In this PD Corner
we highlight resources for new teachers and teacher mentors.
It's never too early to start thinking about how you will
support new teachers or teachers who will be new to your
school next year.

Supporting Beginning Teachers: How Administrators, Teachers,
and Policymakers Can Help New Teachers Succeed is a concise
booklet that outlines the benefits of induction programs
and gives teachers and administrators tips for helping
new teachers thrive:

(Use the text links in the left column to browse

Middle-level educators will find Rick Wormeli's book
Day One and Beyond to be an ideal anchor text for an
induction program. Read Chapter 1, "The Unique Nature
of Middle School Teaching":

The Mentoring Leadership and Resource Network (MLRN)
offers a model mentoring program and over seventy articles
and resources on mentoring:

Thinking about becoming a mentor or wondering how you
can mentor new teachers at your school? The first chapter
of Mentoring Beginning Teachers is a helpful resource that
answers common questions. The book moves from mentoring rationales
and benefits to concrete strategies you can use to help others:

5) A tribute to Marie Clay
----------------------------------------------------------------
Marie Clay, who died last month at the age of 81,
profoundly influenced educators worldwide. As the developer
of Reading Recovery she was instrumental in establishing that
early identification and intervention can help struggling
readers and that children begin to learn literacy concepts
at a very early age (emergent literacy).

In this short and lively interview with Kim Hill of Radio
New Zealand, Dr. Stuart McNaughton, a student of Marie Clay
and professor of education at the University of Auckland, reflects
on Clay's aversion to labels, how Reading Recovery emerged from her
early work, and how she "skirted the Reading Wars":
