1) Responsive Literacy Coaching
----------------------------------------------------------------
Literacy coaching has emerged as a major force for improving
reading instruction and student achievement, and it's crucial that
coaches be well prepared. In her new book Responsive Literacy
Coaching, Cheryl Dozier support coaches with a strategic framework
that promotes responsive, collegial, thoughtful, thought-
provoking, and deliberate coaching, and she provides a range of
practical tools that coaches can use to achieve their goals.

Focusing on the relationship between coach and teacher, Cheryl
shows how coaches can effect and sustain change in teaching
practices while avoiding many pitfalls. Vignettes and examples of
coaching interactions are woven throughout the book and bring
together multiple voices from teachers, coaches, administrators,
and students from a wide variety of classrooms and schools. The
book includes a foreword by Peter Johnston and a chapter that
addresses frequently asked questions.

2) Author Conversations: Peter Johnston
----------------------------------------------------------------
"People are deathly afraid of making mistakes. Part of a coach's
job is to encourage people to make mistakes and think about what
they can learn from them. It's the fear of mistakes that stops
people from trying new and interesting things."

In our latest Author Conversations audio podcast, Peter Johnston
talks about the fear of mistakes and not teaching the "right" way.
The author of Choice Words and Knowing Literacy also wrestles with
praise and the use of the word "smart" with students:

3) PD Corner: Spotlight on boys
----------------------------------------------------------------
New York Public Radio recently interviewed DePauw University
English professor Tom Chiarella ("The Problem with Boys", Esquire,
July 2006) and Dr. Leonard Sax, author of Why Gender Matters.
Their discussion explores gender differences, achievement and
college enrollment gaps, and what schools can do to better support
boys. Listen to the entire 30-minute audio here:

Boys" section, where you will also find a link to the Esquire
article.)

The think tank Education Sector provides a contrary viewpoint,
looking at a variety of national statistics and concluding that
the boy crisis hype is overblown:

Guys Read is an engaging website created by children's book author
Jon Scieszka. Its mission is to lure boys into reading by helping
them find high-interest books:

The subjects many boys like to write about (war, weapons,
outlandish fiction, zany or bathroom humor) often do not get a
warm reception from teachers. In Chapter 5 of his new book Boy
Writers, Ralph Fletcher argues that we must "widen the circle" and
give boys more choice if we want to engage them as writers:

4) TEACH: Inspiration is the Greatest Teacher
----------------------------------------------------------------
The award-winning film TEACH chronicles the trials and rewards of
four first-year teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School
District. This inspiring film was produced in tandem with The
First Year, a Peabody Award-winning film that premiered on PBS,
and was created to attract talented people to the profession. To
that end, the film was re-released earlier this year and made
available for free online:
