1) PD Corner: Becoming a Literacy Leader
----------------------------------------------------------------
*January Quote of the Month*

"Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other."
--John F. Kennedy

In the new book, Becoming a Literacy Leader, Jennifer Allen
explores her role as literacy specialist, staff developer, and
study group facilitator, working side-by-side with new and veteran
teachers to support the latest literacy teaching practices.

This book provides a portrait of successful schoolwide literacy
and PD practices for principals, literacy specialists, coaches,
and anyone in a leadership role. You will find practical
suggestions for collaborative change, coaching, intervention,
fluency, assessment, and designing a literacy room for meetings
and professional development.

Becoming a Literacy Leader is now available in print, and you can
also review the entire text on-line:

The Web has a wealth of resources for new school and district
literacy leaders. Here are two sites that provide excellent
starting points for discussing leadership and taking action.

In "A Blueprint for Literacy Leadership," the Children's Literacy
Initiative identifies nine key areas of knowledge and suggests
resources for achieving them:

New Zealand's Literacy Leadership Project includes tools for
schools and districts to systematically tackle the development of
a schoolwide vision. The goals and suggested action plans can be
found here:
