1) More Than Guided Reading
----------------------------------------------------------------
Is there too much emphasis on guided reading in primary
classrooms? In her new book, More Than Guided Reading, classroom
teacher and literacy coach Cathy Mere shows you how to find the
right instructional mix to help students gain independence. This
practical text includes sample lessons, questions for conferences,
and ideas for revamping guided reading groups. It will challenge
you and your colleagues to rethink the role of guided reading in a
balanced literacy program.

More Than Guided Reading is available now, and you can preview the
entire book on-line here:

3) PD Corner: The Joy of Conferring
----------------------------------------------------------------
*November Quote of the Month*

"The most important piece of advice I'd give to a new teacher when
it comes to conferring, or someone just launching a readers'
workshop, is 'relax.' Think about it as a conversation. Know that
in the beginning it may very well feel a bit awkward. But aren't
all first conversations?"
--Debbie Miller

Conferring with individual students is a joy and challenge. We've
heard plenty about the challenges; Debbie Miller's new video
series is all about the joy of learning one-on-one about students.
The Joy of Conferring is a series of two video programs from
Debbie Miller's first grade classroom in Denver, Colorado.

The first program in the series, "Listen and Guide: The Dynamics
of Conferring," presents six reading conferences with children who
have diverse needs and interests. The focus of each conference
ranges from decoding and comprehension to writing authentic
responses to books.

The second program in the series, "Three Minutes or Less,"
presents in almost real time the ways Debbie is able to check in
with an entire class of students. Many of these conferences are
less than a minute long, yet Debbie still manages to find time to
instruct and listen carefully.

Available in both VHS and DVD, the DVD version includes extra
footage with Debbie's explanation of anchor charts, a whole class
lesson for book selection, and a bonus conference. The Viewing
Guide provides conference transcripts, workshop suggestions, and
new writing by Debbie about conferring and book selection.

4) Author Conversations: Debbie Miller & Kathy Collins, Part II
----------------------------------------------------------------
In the second part of this three-part video series, Debbie Miller
and Kathy Collins reflect on their experiences writing
professional books, and the challenge of finishing while their
thinking about teaching continues to evolve:
