1) Comprehension Lessons for English Language Learners
----------------------------------------------------------------
The prospect of teaching reading comprehension strategies to a
classroom full of students, some of whom speak English and some of
whom don't, can be overwhelming. When students learning English
are at different levels, the task is even more challenging.

Juli Kendall and Outey Khuon have found that small-group strategy
instruction is the key to helping English Language Learners read
with understanding. Their new book, Making Sense, outlines the
classroom conditions necessary for successful small-group
instruction, and provides 52 kid-tested lessons for grades K-8
that are organized by the five main stages of language
proficiency.

Making Sense will be available in print next month, but you can
review the entire book on-line now. Follow this link for details
and links to each chapter:

2) Play
----------------------------------------------------------------
"I confess: My students play with blocks. Despite the current
obsession with standards and standardized testing, some of us are
still letting children play in our classrooms."

The Spring 2005 issue of Rethinking Schools focuses on early
childhood, and includes this essay by Seth Shteir on the
importance of block building in his school's K-2 curriculum:

Rethinking Schools posts select articles from their current issue
and the complete text of past issues on their site. Many of the
articles from the Spring 2005 issue are available here:

3) Video as a teaching tool
----------------------------------------------------------------
When is video a more effective instructional medium than text?
What are the pitfalls of video instruction and how can they be
avoided? This article from Tuesday's edition of the Christian
Science Monitor examines the shift from print- to video-based
media in teaching, and highlights some of the concerns of experts
in the learning field:
