It helps to listen carefully to the reader's pacing and intonation--and to consider how essential a missed word is to understanding the entire piece before you jump in." In this article from ASCD's Education Leadership, Kathleen Fay and Suzanne Whaley offer two examples of student interactions where patience and careful listening provide insights that enhance instruction: http://www.stenhouse.com/rdattention.htm Kathleen Fay and Suzanne Whaley are authors of the book, Becoming One Community: Reading and Writing with English Language Learners.
