1) PD Corner: A process for talking about reading
----------------------------------------------------------------
*April Quote of the Month*

"Are you really listening...or are you just waiting for your turn
to talk?"
--Robert Montgomery (1807-1855), English poet

Active readers listen to the voice in their head when they read,
merge their thinking with the information, and take their thinking
public by talking and sharing. In their new video, Read, Write,
and Talk, Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis present a framework
for active literacy that sets kids up to read, respond, and expand
understanding. Segments include Engage the Kids, Make Thinking
Visible, Respond in Writing, Share Thinking, Independent Practice,
and Whole-Group Share. Follow the link below to download the free
Viewing Guide.

The Florida Literacy and Reading Excellence Initiative (FLaRE) has
posted an excellent resource for leaders who want to improve the
quality of their study groups. The four-page guide includes a
wealth of practical tips (click on the "Study Groups" link under
"FLaRE Professional Papers"):

2) Standards for secondary literacy coaches
----------------------------------------------------------------
The International Reading Association is seeking comments on a
draft document, "Standards for Middle and High School Literacy
Coaches and Subject Matter Teachers," which is being developed
jointly with NCTE, NCTM, NCSS, and NSTA. The standards are
intended to provide guidance to school leaders, teacher educators,
policymakers, subject area teachers, and coaches themselves.

The draft includes two leadership standards and three subject-
specific standards. Educators are encouraged to review the
document and respond with comments (which can be submitted online)
by April 7:

NCTE's Web site has a comprehensive resource page on literacy
coaching, with links to articles, guides, and recommended texts:

The following article from the Carnegie Reporter provides an
excellent background and history on literacy coaching in its
various forms:

3) Attentive listening with ELLs
----------------------------------------------------------------
"It is often easy to notice the errors that a student learning
English makes when reading, but it can be difficult to decide when
to intervene. It helps to listen carefully to the reader's pacing
and intonation--and to consider how essential a missed word is to
understanding the entire piece before you jump in."

In this article from ASCD's Education Leadership, Kathleen Fay and
Suzanne Whaley offer two examples of student interactions where
patience and careful listening provide insights that enhance
instruction:

One Community: Reading and Writing with English Language Learners.
