Myers III, 59, Chief Executive Officer of Highlights for Children, Inc., died unexpectedly on January 26 in Columbus, Ohio. He was a friend, patron, and champion, instrumental in helping to launch Stenhouse with conversations that began twelve years ago at the IRA convention in San Antonio. Stenhouse would not have got started, much less be where it is, without him. Read Garry's complete obituary here: http://www.stenhouse.com/myers.asp ---------------------------------------------------------------- 3) PD Corner: Reconsidering time-out ---------------------------------------------------------------- *February Quote of the Month* "For time-out to work, it is vital for teachers to believe in and feel capable of implementing it as a strategy that enhances autonomy and classroom participation. At best, time-out is a useful way to teach children to refocus and return to successful participation in class activity...at worst, when it is seen as simply punitive, time-out kindles resentment and can escalate disruptive or defiant behavior." --Ruth Charney, author of Teaching Children to Care "Time-out" is one of the most frequently used disciplinary tools by teachers in elementary schools. But is it consistently applied? Do colleagues share the same sense of the purpose for time-outs? The Responsive Classroom newsletter has two fine short articles that can spark thoughtful discussions of discipline at a staff meeting. "Positive" time-out shows how the practice can be used calmly, consistently, and help students develop self-control: http://www.responsiveclassroom.org/newsletter/16_1NL_1.asp "Buddy teacher" time-out is a creative new strategy that teams teachers in nearby classrooms to assist each other: http://www.responsiveclassroom.org/newsletter/17_1NL_1.asp Finally, if you are interested in time-outs as part of a larger scheme of building a caring, ethical classroom community, Ruth Charney's book, Teaching Children to Care, is the definitive resource: http://www.stenhouse.com/8908.asp?r=n63 ---------------------------------------------------------------- 4) Running the O'Hearn ---------------------------------------------------------------- "I don't want this to be a school for children with disabilities, because then it's not inclusive. Inclusion only works if you have a balance." --Bill Henderson, principal of the Patrick O'Hearn Elementary School This feature article from Sunday's Boston Globe magazine delves into the success of "the O'Hearn," a Boston elementary school that has been fully inclusive for over a decade. The story illustrates how a strong principal, along with committed teachers and parents, can create excellence in the face of many obstacles: A Matter of Principal (Free registration may be required.) The O'Hearn is the subject of Including Every Parent, a book/video package from the Project for School Innovation, a Boston nonprofit organization that works with model schools to document effective practices. You can read Chapter 1 of the book and view a 2-minute clip of the video here: http://www.psinnovation.org/PSI/btft08-2.html And check out the following inclusion resources from Stenhouse: All Children Are Special: Creating an Inclusive Classroom Gregg Lang and Chris Berberich * 152 pp/paper * $21.00 * 1995 Written for the non-specialist, this book offers practical information and strategies for creating inclusive classrooms that welcome, value, and nurture all learners. http://www.stenhouse.com/0017.asp?r=n63 We Teach Them All: Teachers Writing About Diversity June Kuzmeskus, editor * 160 pp/paper * $15.00 * 1996 In this collection of 30 stories, poems, and personal essays, 22 teachers from schools across Massachusetts examine their classrooms, their roles as teachers, and their schools through the lens of diversity. http://www.stenhouse.com/0032.asp?r=n63 ---------------------------------------------------------------- 5) Stenhouse is on the move ---------------------------------------------------------------- We just moved our offices across the street and have changed our mailing address.
