1) Great teaching defined
----------------------------------------------------------------
What if you could travel the country, visiting classrooms,
exploring what works and what doesn't, and identify a handful of
key teaching structures that lead to success? Harvey Daniels and
Marilyn Bizar have done just that in their new book, Teaching the
Best Practice Way, now available in print:

Fully updating and expanding Methods that Matter (Stenhouse,
1998), Teaching the Best Practice Way adds the stories of twenty
more celebrated teachers and a brand-new chapter focusing on
reading as thinking. Lively and conversational, Daniels and Bizar
present seven methods that embody exemplary instruction across all
grades and subjects, with stories, examples, and practical
classroom materials.

2) A cry for reform in teacher education
----------------------------------------------------------------
"We have a sacred responsibility to the young men and women who
step forward to declare: 'I want to be a teacher.' Our part is to
help them become good teachers--excellent teachers--and when they
do, to reward them accordingly."

In this Education Week opinion piece, Carnegie Corporation
president Vartan Gregorian takes universities to task for failing
to adequately prepare teachers, and describes the Carnegie reform
effort Teachers for a New Era, which has enlisted participation
from 11 colleges and universities:

3) PD Corner: Understanding Tweens
----------------------------------------------------------------
*November Quote of the Month*

"The tween stage is when children are either launched--
educationally, socially, and emotionally--or get lost and left
behind."
--Ann Hulbert, author of Raising America

Teachers of children ages 8-12 have long known that this is a
uniquely important stage of development. Ann Hulbert's provocative
article in Slate, "Tween-Age Wasteland," challenges some of the
assumptions of the research and conventional wisdom on tweens:

Teachers launching a writing program for tweens can look to the
new Stenhouse book Writing Through the Tween Years by Bruce Morgan
with Deb Odom. You can now review the entire text on-line--the
book will be available in print later this month:

4) Academics expand in kindergarten
----------------------------------------------------------------
A recent Washington Post article describes the changes taking
place in U.S. kindergartens, as many schools move to a full-day
program and want students to establish basic reading skills before
they enter first grade:
