1) Stop the Bullying
----------------------------------------------------------------
In this issue of Newslinks we provide resources and news about the
problem of bullying and what educators can do about it.

Education World has a special page devoted to the topic, including
lesson plans and over a dozen articles:

http://www.educationworld.com/a_special/bully.shtml

Author and consultant Carol Hurst explores bullying in children's
literature, with short descriptions of suggested books, classroom
activities, and questions for discussion:

http://www.carolhurst.com/subjects/bullies.html

Legislation has recently been introduced in Congress that would
require states, districts, and schools that receive funds from
NCLB's Safe and Drug Free Schools Act to develop bullying
prevention and intervention programs. For a two-page overview and
details, visit this page:

(Click on "Legislative Overview" for the two-page overview.)

Stop the Bullying: A Handbook for Teachers, by Ken Rigby, a
leading authority on bullying in schools, is an excellent resource
for assessing bullying in your schools and developing policies and
support structures. It includes practical reproducible
questionnaires and handouts and is only $15. For details, go to:

2) PD Corner: A School Change Toolkit
----------------------------------------------------------------
*October Quote of the Month*

"I haven't got the slightest idea of how to change people but I
keep a long list of prospective candidates just in case I ever
figure it out."
--David Sedaris, author and humorist

If you are looking for a comprehensive resource for developing a
plan to change schools (and the people in them), look no further
than "Asking the Right Questions: A School Change Toolkit" from
the nonprofit organization McREL:

http://www.mcrel.org/programs/toolkit/index.asp

McREL also offers free newsletters and publications with research
updates.

----------------------------------------------------------------
3) It's not what you say, but how you say it
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Sarah exhibits exceptional verbal skills and an obvious
propensity for social interaction."
(She never stops talking.)

"Molly demonstrates problems with spatial relationships."
(It's November and she still hasn't found her cubby.)

Read more from education writer Linda Starr's "Dictionary of
Educational Euphemisms" in this recent article:

On a more serious note, the following ERIC digest provides a
concise look at report card comments--why they are important,
suggestions on how to construct effective comments, words or
phrases to be cautious of using, and sources of information.

And check out the book Well-Chosen Words: Narrative Assessments
and Report Card Comments, which offers the best strategies for
writing about students' performance (just $15):

4) Online seminars from SDE
----------------------------------------------------------------
Staff Development for Educators (SDE) is now offering a series of
live 90-minute "eSEMINARs" which can be presented on-site via the
Internet using a conference phone, computer, and projector. Rick
Wormeli, author of the books Day One and Beyond and Meet Me in the
Middle, will be presenting two sessions on Differentiated
Instruction for grades 4-12 on October 25 and November 8:

5) Remembering Don Holdaway
----------------------------------------------------------------
Don Holdaway died in September in Australia. He had a massive
influence on literacy education throughout the English-speaking
world, and his book, Foundations of Literacy, continues to find
new and appreciative readers. In this note on Don's funeral, Brian
Cambourne conveys wonderfully how Don affected everyone, in or out
of teaching:
