As July draws to a close, teachers are starting to prepare for 
their first days of the school year with colleagues and students. 
You may be looking for some new learning around an old topic--how 
to launch a caring community in your classroom. Fifth grade 
teacher Janet Gannon realized that respectful environments with 
students always begin with collective rule setting. In a twist on 
that classic principle, she decided to come up with new rules to 
govern her own behavior, and had her most successful year ever:
