2) Citywide book clubs
----------------------------------------------------------------
Stenhouse author Ralph Fletcher was the focus of a recent
celebration by the city of Dover, New Hampshire, which chose his
book FLYING SOLO (Yearling Books) for "Dover Reads." This five-
week program included events and activities throughout the
community that were centered on the book, and encouraged children
and adults alike to read and talk about the book:

The program's official Web page is here:

Dover is one of over 100 cities, counties, or states that have
begun similar programs, according to the American Booksellers
Association. For tips on launching a community book club, visit

program Web sites:

3) The latest on reading research
----------------------------------------------------------------
The theme of the March issue of ASCD's Educational Leadership
journal is "What Research Says About Reading." Visit the
journal's Web site to read several articles in their entirety and

4) ReadWriteThink
----------------------------------------------------------------
IRA, NCTE, and MarcoPolo have teamed up to offer a great reading
and language arts resource, ReadWriteThink. This Web site has
over 250 lessons organized by grade level and literacy strand,
interactive student tools, more than 140 links to language arts
Web sites, and a literary calendar with dates linked to classroom
activities. Lessons are correlated with NCTE and IRA standards,
and the site is regularly updated with new resources:

ReadWriteThink is one of seven K-12 content Web sites that are
accessible from MarcoPolo. Others include Illuminations (National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics), Science NetLinks (American
Association for the Advancement of Science), Xpeditions (National
Geographic Society), ArtsEdge (JFK Center for the Performing
Arts), EconEdLink (National Council on Economic Education), and
EDSITEment (National Endowment for the Humanities):

The Search feature on MarcoPolo accesses resources from all seven
sites.
