1) Great calendar sites for 2004
----------------------------------------------------------------
Looking to spice up your new calendar? Here are a few
suggestions. First off is the convenient "This Day in History"
page from HistoryChannel.com, where you can easily switch between
categories such as Civil War, Literary, Wall Street, and
Entertainment:

http://www.historychannel.com/today/

The constantly updated radio site 440.com features a "Those Were
the Days" page, including one featured event, birthday, or chart
topper for each date, along with a long list in each category by
year (today is "John Hancock Day"):

Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators includes a list of children
and YA authors by name and date, which can be downloaded in PDF
format:

Finally, if you're wondering how to celebrate the 100th day of
school, you'll find no fewer than 300 ideas at Joan Holub's site:

*January Quote of the Month*

"I've come to believe there are only two things you need in any
new teaching situation to succeed--humility and inquiry."
--Lisa Delpit

Gathering baseline data from students is the start of inquiry for
many teachers looking to improve student reading skills. If
helping students develop new strategies for comprehending text is
a priority in your school, you might want to check out this
reading strategies inventory. It's a great tool for analyzing
needs and strengths of students beyond third grade:

*Hot Links*

This month we are introducing a new feature in the Professional
Development Corner: "Hot Links" research and resource summaries.
Currently available only to Newslinks subscribers, these essays
connect research studies on the Web with teacher resources, and
give you quick takes on high-interest topics in literacy
education.

"Overcoming the Fourth Grade Slump" is our first Hot Links
feature. Has decoding been emphasized in elementary reading
instruction at the expense of comprehension skills, which are
essential in fourth grade and beyond? Follow this exclusive link
to learn more:

If you have other topics you'd like to suggest for future Hot
Links, please send your ideas to newsletter@stenhouse.com.

3) Visual literacy bonanza
----------------------------------------------------------------
Steve Moline, author of the book I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN and video
WHAT IS VISUAL LITERACY?, has developed a wonderful Web site that
introduces the key concepts of visual literacy and includes free
teaching materials:
