1) Support your upper elementary readers
----------------------------------------------------------------
"When we thought about our own book shopping, we realized that we
spend hours browsing in bookstores and libraries. We look at
covers, read book reviews, talk to friends, read the front flaps
and the first pages before choosing books. So much of the joy of
reading is in finding a book that we hope to love or one that we
are eager to read. We can't take that part of reading away from
our students. We can't expect our students to choose books
quickly if we want their choices to be thoughtful or if we want
them to read deeply. We need to give them the time to choose good
books and the strategies to do so. We value good book choice as
much as we value other reading skills."

--from Chapter 7, "Browsing and Book Choice All Year Long," in
the new book STILL LEARNING TO READ

Franki Sibberson and Karen Szymusiak, authors of BEYOND LEVELED
BOOKS, bring you a new guide to teaching reading in grades 3-6.
>From classroom organization to book selection to reading
strategies that are especially important for this age group,
STILL LEARNING TO READ will show you how to balance reading
instruction with the content demands of the upper elementary
curriculum.

2) Collaboration days
----------------------------------------------------------------
Read about how Visalia Unified School District (California) uses
early dismissal to provide collaborative professional
development:

A Day for Teaching Teachers

The district's calendar for collaboration days highlights the
scheduling challenge, especially for a large district that has a
mix of year-round and traditional schools:

3) PD Corner: School-based staff development
----------------------------------------------------------------
*October Quote of the Month*

"School-based professional development is not work for the faint-
hearted. To do it well requires a calm disposition and the trust-
building skills of a mediator, combined with the steely
determination and perseverance of an innovator."
--Ellen Guiney, Executive Director of the Boston Plan for
Excellence

More and more school leaders are realizing the only path to
sustained change in classrooms is through site-based professional
development. Many teachers and curriculum coordinators are being
tapped to lead these programs in their home districts. Who knows
better what the needs and challenges are at any school than
someone who works in it? For an excellent summary of the benefits
and pitfalls of school-based development programs, read "Making
Our Own Road," a report by Alan Richard written for the Edna
McConnell Clark Foundation:

Stenhouse has developed a program of resources for school leaders
spearheading site-based professional opportunities. Read, Share,
Teach (RST) provides innovative and detailed descriptions of
workshops tied to our books and videos. The newest RST offering
uses materials from Cris Tovani's book I READ IT, BUT I DON'T GET
IT and video series THOUGHTFUL READING. To download the free 21-
page facilitator's guide, which includes four hour-long
workshops, go to:
