1) Social & emotional learning: It's about time
----------------------------------------------------------------
"[School leaders] tend to think of the most direct way to make a
short-term difference, but it's a false choice between academics
and social-emotional skills."

--Roger P. Weissberg, executive director of the Collaborative for
Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)

In spite of the current focus on standards and measurable
academic achievement, broader social-emotional curricula are
gaining ground as research begins to show that such programs
improve academic performance in the long run. This recent article
from Education Week provides a good overview and highlights some
of the current research, both outcome-based and cognitive:

One of the organizations highlighted in this article is the
Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning
(CASEL), a clearinghouse for quality programs that helps schools
identify and implement appropriate curricula. This year they
published SAFE AND SOUND: An Education Leader's Guide to
Evidence-Based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs, the
culmination of a three-year study that evaluates 80 programs. You
can download the entire guide and several other useful resources
(including a short video on SEL) for free at:

http://www.casel.org/projects_products/safeandsound.php

And for links to over 200 program Web sites, go to:

http://www.casel.org/about_sel/SELprograms.php

One of the programs reviewed in SAFE AND SOUND is the Responsive
Classroom, which is one of the 22 programs rated by CASEL as a
"Select SEL" program for its coverage of essential skill areas,
effectiveness, and outstanding staff development. To learn more
about the Responsive Classroom, visit:

Books published by the Northeast Foundation for Children
(developer of the Responsive Classroom) are also available from
Stenhouse.

2) Fake reading and what to do about it
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Being a straight-A fake reader myself, I know all about the
tricks kids use to make teachers think reading is taking place."
--Cris Tovani, author of I READ IT, BUT I DON'T GET IT

*September Quote of the Month*

"Lasting change does not happen overnight. Lasting change happens
in infinitesimal increments: A day, an hour, a minute, a
heartbeat at a time."
--Sarah Ban Breathnach, author of SIMPLE ABUNDANCE

New teachers need support to help them survive and thrive, and
mentors are a key part of that support. To coincide with the
release of the new Stenhouse video series MENTORING and book
MENTORING ACROSS BOUNDARIES, we've compiled links to some quality
mentoring resources on the Web. Many of these links will lead you
to sites with resources tailored to your interests, including
research reports, Web resources for new teachers, and more
general teacher recruitment and induction strategies.

We start with a collection of articles from Educational
Leadership, with the theme "supporting new teachers"; one
identifies the qualities of a good mentor:
Supporting New Teachers

>From the Journal of Staff Development, an article that outlines
the key competencies that mentors need to develop:

This report from WestEd is an excellent introduction to
supporting beginning teachers, including the role of mentoring:

The New Teacher Center Web site includes this case study of one
large teacher induction program in Santa Cruz, California:

>From the Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy, a research
report that examines the effect of district policy on beginning
teachers from the perspective of two districts and three
beginning teachers:

And if you want to see high-quality mentoring conferences in the
midst of teaching, check out the new MENTORING videos from
Stenhouse. The videos include a free Viewing Guide, and can be
combined with the books MENTORING BEGINNING TEACHERS and
MENTORING ACROSS BOUNDARIES for an affordable and flexible in-
service training.
