1) Just in: Mentoring Across Boundaries
----------------------------------------------------------------
Mentoring is one of the most effective approaches for keeping
teachers in the field. Hot off the press, MENTORING ACROSS
BOUNDARIES explores many key aspects of the mentoring
relationship, such as culture, gender, and age, and addresses the
most common challenges to successful mentoring.

Mentors, administrators, and teacher educators will find
MENTORING ACROSS BOUNDARIES to be a valuable resource for
cultivating mentoring relationships and boosting beginning
teacher support. Follow the links below to review this book on-
line in its entirety, and for details on the forthcoming
companion video.

establishing rules at the start of the school year, based on the
Responsive Classroom approach:

3) Resources for reading aloud
----------------------------------------------------------------
Read-aloud is an enjoyable time for both students and teachers,
and an essential component of reading instruction. Here are a
collection of links that will help you make the most of read-
aloud.

The Literacy Connections Web site is rich with all kinds of
literacy resources, including a page devoted to reading aloud:

http://www.literacyconnections.com/ReadingAloud.html

Looking for some new ideas for read-aloud this year? Check out
the Read-Aloud registry, which lists dozens of K-8 suggestions
that go beyond the "old reliables":

http://www.geocities.com/aletain/index.html

If your read-aloud repertoire is short on good nonfiction books,
check out the Study Guide to KNOWING HOW: Researching and Writing
Nonfiction 3-8. The authors include read-aloud suggestions for
each chapter as a way to begin or end each study group session. A
more extensive bibliography, organized by nonfiction writing
strategy, can be found in Appendix A of the book:

(Look for the "Study Guide" link.)

The appendix of GREAT BEGINNINGS: Creating a Literacy-Rich
Kindergarten has an outline for a parent workshop on reading
aloud, perfect for the start of the school year:

(Click on the "Appendix B" link.)

Finally, Mary Lee Hahn's book RECONSIDERING READ-ALOUD is a
comprehensive resource for teachers in grades 4-8, and includes a
study guide with three suggested workshops for teachers:
