Noon-1:00 p.m. Ralph Fletcher
Ralph Fletcher
Ralph Fletcher is a friend of writing teachers everywhere. His latest title is Boy Writers and he has co-authored many books and videos for writing teachers including Craft Lessons, Nonfiction Craft Lessons, When Students Write (video), Teaching the Qualities of Writing, and numerous others. He has also written many books for young readers. Ralph and his wife JoAnn have four sons. He grows orchids and giant pumpkins, enjoys books, travel, movies, and dark chocolate.


1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Cris Tovani
Cris Tovani

Cris Tovani taught elementary school for ten years before becoming a high school reading specialist and English teacher. A nationally known consultant, she chooses to continue teaching high school students full-time. She has also worked for many years as a staff developer for the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), the consortium that has received national acclaim for its work in reading comprehension reform. In addition to teaching and consulting, she is an adjunct instructor for University of Denver and the University of Colorado at Denver.

She is the author of Comprehending Content, Do I Really Have to Teach Reading, I Read It but I Don't Get It, and Thoughtful Reading



2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Teri Lesesne
Teri Lesesne
Teri S. Lesesne is an associate professor at Sam Houston State University in Houston,Texas, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in young adult and children's literature in the department of library science. She is also a fifteen-year veteran of the middle school English classroom. Teri coordinates an annual YA conference for her university, and she currently writes the YA review column for Voices from the Middle. She serves on the advisory board for the The ALAN Review, The Reading Teacher, and Voice of Youth Advocates, and she currently co-chairs the Middle-Level Section Steering Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English. In her spare time, Teri is the proud grandmother of three charming granddaughters and three handsome grandsons.

Teri is the author of Naked Reading and Making the Match.


Saturday, November 18

3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Mary Cowhey
Mary Cowhey

Mary Cowhey has been teaching first and second grade at Jackson St. School in Northampton, MA for nine years. Before becoming a teacher, she was a community organizer for fourteen years. She has won numerous awards for teaching, including a 2002 Milken National Educator Award, an Anti-Defamation League World of Difference Teacher Recognition Award and a National League of Women Voters Award.

Mary is the author Black Ants and Buddhists.



3:00-4:00 p.m.: Jeff Anderson
Jeff Anderson

Jeff Anderson teaches English and reading at a Title 1 middle school in San Antonio, Texas. For fifteen years, Jeff has worked with teachers and students in schools, specializing in strategies to improve writing instruction with at-risk populations in kindergarten through eighth grade. He's a part-time professor at Trinity University (TX), a national trainer for Write Traits, a writing project leader, and a frequent presenter at state and national conferences.

He is the author of Mechanically Inclined.

10:30 -11:30 a.m. Gail Boushey and Joan Moser
Gail Boushey and Joan Moser

Gail Boushey and Joan Moser are known simply as "The Sisters" to the teachers they have worked with in Washington state and throughout the country. They are sisters, and elementary teachers with over forty years of teaching experience between them. Gail is currently a literacy specialist and Joan is a grades K-2 multiage teacher. In addition to full-time teaching, they are nationally known consultants specializing in literacy, assessment, and creating beautiful spaces for learning in classrooms.

They are the authors of The Daily Five.
