Almost half of all beginning teachers will leave the profession within their first 5 years, and reports say that a teacher shortage is approaching. While researchers may disagree on the major causes of this shortage, nearly all agree that ongoing professional development is key to reducing the attrition rate among new teachers and minimizing the impact of this shortage
We recently visited Literacy Specialist Jen Allen, author of Becoming A Literacy Leader at her Waterville, Maine school where she described some of the challenges she faces in supporting beginning teachers and her plan to institute a monthly inservice for a group of new teachers arriving this fall.
