Remembering Juli Kendall

Stenhouse author and literacy leader Juli Kendall died in late August after a long battle with cancer. Juli was the author of Making Sense: Small-Group Comprehension Lessons for English Language Learners and Writing Sense: Integrated Reading and Writing Lessons for English Language Learners, both co-written with Outey Khuon.

Juli was a founder of the Literacy Workshop, an online educators' community, and a frequent contributor to MiddleWeb, which published her online reading/writing journal from 2001-2005.

Over more than three decades of teaching in Southern California schools, Juli worked in special education, preschool, bilingual education, and language arts. Summarizing her career on MiddleWeb, Juli wrote:

Perhaps the unifying thread in my career is English Language Learners. I am trained in Reading Recovery and in Descubriendo La Lectura, the reconstruction of Reading Recovery in Spanish. I have extensive training and experience teaching reading to students whose first language is Spanish as well as students whose first language is Khmer (Cambodian). This is what I have done the most, and this is what I love the best. "Do what you love; love what you do."
