Stenhouse author and teacher consultant Rick Wormeli has won the New England League of Middle School's James P. Garvin Award for distinguished service.
"[Rick] is a visionary for middle level learning," said Mary Childress, NELMS board chair in her presentation at the League's annual conference. "He is passionate about teaching and serious about how important quality education is for our adolescents, but always delivers his message with a fabulous, laugh out loud, sense of humor," she added.
The James P. Garvin Award, created in 1986, is given to teacher leaders from New England who direct others to excellence in middle level education, whose service reflects a high level of dedication and commitment to the cause of quality education, and who are invested in helping others to better understand the unique needs of young adolescents.
"It means a lot to me, because the award is for those who contribute to the profession, not just whether or not they are good teachers," says Rick, adding that the award is an affirmation that he is "on the right track" when it comes to writing books and training teachers.
"Writing books can be very lonely sometimes," he says, "and you wonder if what you are doing is helpful to others."
Rick is the author of Differentiation, Fair Isn't Always Equal, Meet Me in the Middle, and Day One and Beyond.
